GTM Live x Ep. 4: Getting Grounded with Anna Drescher

Regardless of what you believe about why and how we got here, we are all humans. So it would make sense that in order to “transcend” our repetitive patterns and chase after our wildest dreams, we would have to first and foremost embody our physicality.

How to Ground

Anna Drescher, Berlin-based yoga instructor and founder of international wellness retreats company Wild & Awakened, walks us through a simple grounding visualization.

As she explains, the practice of grounding is essential for achieving our wildest dreams.

Let’s repeat that:

The practice of grounding is essential for achieving our wildest dreams.

Yes, the point of all grounding is to feel safe and centered. It’s also a process of becoming fully aware of our humanness and embracing where we’re at. Through this, we cultivate compassionate for ourselves, acceptance of where we are and what we have to work with, and become ready to rise up into our heart space.

Here are her three simple steps to get grounded:

  1. Feel your physical body.

Whether you’re at work with your eyes open, or lying down in the comfort of your home, the first step is notice physical sensations. Notice everything you feel including the weight of the clothes on your body and the temperature of the air on your skin.

  2. Imagine roots anchoring you down.

Become aware of every point of contact between your and the floor (or chair). then imagine roots grounding you from your seat down into the earth. Imagine how it would feel to have these supportive roots anchoring you to the earth.

  3. Take 3-10 deep breaths.

Most of our breathing consists of shallow, stressed inhales and exhales. Use this grounding time to fill your lungs with each inhale and press every ounce of air out with each exhale. As an added grounding bonus, you can imagine that with each breath out you send your worries down your roots (from step 2) and down into the earth to be recycled.

While you can always practice this in times of stress, Anna suggest cultivating a regular practice of grounding. That way, you have a strong foundation to lean into when chaos arises.
