We funked up and we're proud of it! This past weekend, local yogis joined Grip The Mat for a one-of-a-kind yoga session in the middle of DC's Funk Parade in the U Street Corridor. That's right. We meditated, vinyasa'ed, and savasana'ed while there were sirens blaring and family's staring. Children joined in, taking up mats of their own and sharing ours!
If you think you're in love with your city, try sitting still and closing your eyes on the side of one of its busiest streets. We can guarantee you will notice new things you never knew were there. For instance, the silence in between cars passing, the sounds of people humming as they pass by or the warmth of the sun on your face (oh, wait... that's because it's been freezing up until this weekend!).
While the weather was close to perfect during our practice, we dedicated our thoughts and intentions to those affected by the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Thank you to those who showed up to practice and donated to the Nepal disaster relief. One of our goals with Grip The Mat is to not only provide tools for people to live balanced lifestyles, but to provide avenues for people to thrive in the community. Our community does not stop at our events borders, but extends through all physical boundaries and past all politics. We continue to hold Nepal in our hearts as neighbors, families and friends try to piece their home back together.
We look forward to meeting everyone back on the mat this month. Here's to taking time to stepping out of routine, meeting new people and trying new things. Life is about living. Don't funk it up ;)
